Story:
The movie starts with the rivalry between Vasi Reddy family (Suman) and Nasser family. Nasser is unchallenged villain of Veera Durgam village for subsequent twenty five years and he derives pleasure killing Vasi Reddy male family members. Then the story moves to Hyderabad city. Rama Chandra (NTR) is an orphan, lives with his friend Ali. He has a girl friend Satya (Trisha). Satya says that she will marry him if only he has a big family.
Rama Raju accepts to go with Rudra Raju (Kota Srinivasa Rao), who comes to adopt him on Satyas force. Rudra Raju introduces Rama Raju to the family and villagers as Vijaya Dwaja Sri Simha, an heir to Vasi Reddy Dynasty. How NTR fights with Nasser family is the next story. Rudra raju also reveals that Vijaya Dwaja Sri Simha is none other than the son of Suman who was grown as an orphan away from rivalry in the village.
Performance:
Dammu is one man show and we can see only NTR in total movie. His performance is the major highlight. Lead actresses Trisha and Kartheeka limited for glamour quotient. Kota did an usual character. Brahmanandam, Ali couldnt make the audience laugh. Nasser did good job as main villain. Suman, Bhanu Priya, Venu, Ahinayasri did well up to their limitations. Dialogues written for Junior NTR are most powerful and he spelled them with ease giving huge build up to each and every scene. Dances wise and dialogeu delivery wise, NTR is unbeatable. First half has three good songs of 'Oh Lilly,' 'Ruler' and 'Dammu' while second half we have 'Vasthu Bangunde.'
On the Technical Front:
Dialogues by Rathnam are good. There are few scenes which are completely conceived for dialogues and Rathnam excelled in those scenes. Music by Keeravani is fine. Songs are not picturized well. Much hyped Ruler song lacked the necessary punch. None of the songs have situations and that is a big minus. Background score is pretty good in emotional scenes. Cinematography is top notch and Art work in Ruler song deserves applause. Production values are rich.
Director Boyapati Srinu tried his best to deliver a blockbuster with NTR. But too much hype and expectations surrounding the film didn't come in handy for him. He failed to reach the expectations. There are few emotional sequences that have his stamp, but on a whole Boyapati didn't live up to the hype.
Analysis
Dammu, as the title suggests is an out and out mass entertainer. Boyapati despite coming up with a routine story, he has incorporated good commercial elements to entertain the fans to the core. Right from the introduction to the end, Dammu is totally NTRs film and Boyapati tried to elevate his image and the Young Tiger totally rocked the screens.
On the flip side, director failed to reach the high expectations with routine story and bad screenplay. Few of the dialogues are vulgar and might keep the families away. Politics based dialogues are forcibly placed but it hints that NTR might soon step into Politics. The quite popular Ruler song has been badly place which is a disappointment.
Excessive violence, lengthy dialogues will be liked by particular sections like masses while it might keep away class audiences. The first half of Dammu is good with entertaining elements and the interval block is extremely good while the second half is high on emotional scenes and action sequences and the climax is decent.
Final Verdict
Dammu is powerful emotional entertainer and a tailor made script for NTR!!! Despite routine formulaic story, Boyapati manages to keep you glued!!!
